1 Week Until Court

I was sitting in court here in TN this morning and watching the hands on the clock tick away. I kept thinking that this time next week, I will once again have my cell phone attached to my hip as I await news of court in Ethiopia. Already, my stomach is doing flip-flops, so I can only imagine what I will feel like next Monday! Actually, I am rather peaceful about court, it is the windfall of activity that comes after court passage that has me antsy. I don't like having to deal with making flight arrangements. Once that part is done, a lot of stress will be gone.

Yesterday, Ashton and I got in the attic and started pulling out tubs of baby stuff. Ash is 4 1/2 and I have NEVER given away, sold, or thrown away anything that belongs to him - I know, pathetic. Well, I thought I was going to cry or at least become misty-eyed but I didn't! I kept looking at the picture of my little girl in the onesie that is far too big and tattered - these children need the clothes far more than my children ever did! The clothes that I am not keeping for Julianna, I am taking with me to Ethiopia for donations. Once my luggage is packed to capacity, I will then give the remaining items to a young girl that my sister-in-law told me about who is very young, pregnant, and on a very tight budget. Honestly, I felt really guilty as I unloaded tub after tub - we are such a blessed and oftentimes spoiled society. We have so much and take it for granted so frequently.

1st Care Package

On June 19, 2009, we mailed a care package to the Pritchett family who will be traveling to ET on July 4th. We included a rattle that says, "Peek-a-boo we love you!"; 5 onesies size newborn; 2 outfits size 0-3 months (these are from Nana Reed, Cousins Hannah and Hailey, and Aunt Denise), a photo album (sorry but you can't see it because it has our baby's picture on it), 2 pacifiers, and a lamb that plays music - all of this in a gallon size Ziploc bag! They agreed to deliver the package to our baby and take photos of her! Please pray for them during their journey to bring their 2 new children home!

The Clover family left yesterday and will be taking pictures for us during their time in ET too! It will be so wonderful to get new pics from them as well. We cannot wait to see how much she has grown - especially her hair after her buzz cut!

Both families promised to love on our baby - THANK YOU!

Court Date

July 6th

What a wonderful day this is turning out to be!

  • This morning, Jason was cleared by the doctor to return to work after breaking his back.
  • He is going to be able to go on a mission trip to the Lakota Indian Tribe in South Dakota.
  • We received word about our court date and it's in 18 days!!!!!!!!

I've been starting to get antsy about our court date, and Jason and my Daddy keep reminding me - it's all in God's timing! I am just SO excited!

Here's a little about what's going to be happening in the next 18 days (AMAZING!):

  1. A government group by the name of MOWA is going to review our adoption paperwork and will hopefully write a letter recommending us as adoptive parents.
  2. Our agency is going to work diligently to make sure that all the paperwork on their end is complete and that Baby "A"'s family shows-up at Court to testify.
  3. If the family shows-up and all the paperwork is in order, then the Judge will decide whether or not to approve the adoption. Basically, the Judge wants to make sure that the birth family is not against the adoption.
  4. If the judge decides Baby "A" as ready for adoption, then he or she approves our case and we start shouting with joy and the tears start falling (who am I kidding - they've been falling for almost 3 years. By the way, I started on our video introducing Baby "A" to you yesterday - I prayed the entire time pics were downloading!)
  5. You get to see pics of our precious baby and her full name will be revealed!
  6. We will travel 2-4 weeks later.

Now, for reality, 40% of families are not successful the first court date. Personally, I prefer to think of it as 60% are successful but that's not how our agency phrases the stats. Oftentimes, the reason a family has to experience a 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th court date is that the Judge is not satisfied that the police reports are in order or maybe the family members didn't show-up (this will be HUGE in our case, so please pray that the family members will show-up and testify without any trouble in locating or transporting them), etc. I ask you to begin petitioning God now that our court date will go very smoothly and that we will pass without any trouble!

We are also wanting to set-up a meeting with Baby "A"'s birth family, so please also be praying about this. Please pray that if this is in God's will that He will orchestrate it and will prepare all of our hearts for this emotional meeting. I want so much to be able to look into the face of the most unselfish woman on earth - the birth mother of my precious baby! I've prayed for her and the birth father and extended family for over 3 years and in my heart, I have such love and respect for them for without them I would not be staring at the picture of this beautiful little miracle!

Referral Acceptance is in the mail

We've signed the required documents, made photocopies, and wrote the check - we have officially accepted our referral! This still does not seem real to me! I just can't stop smiling and kissing her pictures! In the earliest picture that we have of her, she is smiling (I know, some people say that babies this young don't smile but I'm telling you, this kid is smiling. It's like she's saying, "Look, Mommy, I'm finally ready to come home. I'm waiting so come get me!" ). I can't wait for her hair to start growing back and see what it's going to look like. I told Jason today that I want to bath her, lotion her up, and kiss her all over - he just laughed but he'll be right there with me joining in!

After court this morning, I met Jason and we went shopping for items for her care package. He picked-out some onesies and I picked out a darling lime green outfit. We're not sure which size to send, so the onesies are newborn and the lime green outfit is 0-3 months. We're hoping that once the next travel group is set for our agency, that we will be able to mail our ziploc bag of goodies to a family who can deliver it for us and take pics. I would love to see the outfits on her so we can get a better idea of her size.

Many of you have asked when we are going to bring her home. The answer is, we don't know yet. Right now, we have to wait and see when our court date is scheduled and then we will receive notification of our tentative travel dates. Please be in prayer so that we can get a fast court date and that everything will be in order and all the necessary people will attend court on that day so our case can be approved. Once our case successfully passes through court, then we hope to travel 2-4 weeks later. I would love to travel sometime in August, but we'll just have to wait and see what God has planned!

We Have a Baby Girl

At 1:15 p.m. yesterday, I was in court when my cell phone starting vibrating. I almost ignored it as I was trying to work-out a case but then changed my mind and boy am I glad I did - the screen said "America World"! I tore out of the courtroom as I whispered, "Hold on, I'm in the middle of court." Terra laughed and whispered back, "Okay." Once I got to where I could talk, there was an awkward silence and then Terra said, "This is Terra from America World and I've got good news for you - this is your referral call." I said, "Oh my goodness, I knew this was going to happen because I have 3 cases on the docket and there's no way I can talk right now!" She said for me to call her back when I could. I told the DA what was happening and she was awesome to try to work with me but of course, one case was a tangled mess and had to be taken at the end of the docket, so it looked like I was stuck waiting. I went to the holding area for adult inmates and made a quick call to Jason and asked him to go up to the office because we were getting our referral call today. Of course, he thought I had lost my mind and I didn't have a lot of time to explain, so he just trusted me and headed to the Square.

At 2:23 p.m., we were on the speakerphone calling America World. Terra was tied-up on another call, so another person, Nicole, told us the good news. She is 2 months old! She weighs approx. 6.4 lbs and is 18.5" long. Nicole filled us in on other details which we will not share publicly as this is our daughter's story to tell when and if she ever wants to. We waited almost an hour for the e-mail because Nicole thought Terra was sending it to us and Terra thought Nicole had sent it. I called AWA and told the receptionist not to let Terra leave the building until she knew we had received our e-mail with our baby's pictures - we were on pins and needles and must have hit "refresh" at least 100 times! Terra called me back and apologized and stayed on the line with me until the e-mail arrived in our inbox. Terra told me I was just going to have a fit when I saw her and boy was she right! She is absolutely beautiful! The first picture shows a baby with a head FULL of hair and then the other 2 show a baby with a shaved head. We found out that she got head lice, so they had to shave her hair. She's adorable both ways!

I can't post any pictures until after court when she officially becomes our daughter....I know it stinks, but that's the rules. Now, what happens next? First, praise God, praise God and praise God! Secondly, please pray that our baby remains healthy. Thirdly, please pray that we get a court date quickly (as in late June or sometime in July) and that the court favorably approves our adoption on the 1st hearing! As soon as we know we pass, then we will post pictures for everyone to ooh and ah over! We will travel 2-4 weeks after court.

There is a rumor - and I reiterate rumor - that the Ethiopian courts may not take a vacation for August and September, so we are praying that the rumor becomes true! It would be so wonderful for families to be able to have court during this time and bring their children home! Please remember this in your prayers as well!

Thank you SO MUCH for all your prayers and support! We've been waiting a long time for this post! It just about killed me not to be able to post last night, but we wanted to be able to tell family members before they read it online or heard about it from others. We ended our celebration last night at Cracker Barrel - which is a family favorite for us. We ate supper with Daddy and rejoiced in the news. Yesterday began as a very difficult day as it marked 7 months since my Mom entered Eternity, however God once again showed-up in a might way! It was with tears of joy that I stood at my Mother's grave yesterday evening and shared the news - I know it's just her body there but it sure helps me to be able to visit. If she had still been alive, we would have celebrated bright and early this morning with a shopping trip for a new outfit for my baby!

Ashton's Reaction:

I'm sure many of you want to know how Ashton reacted to the news. First of all, remember he is only 4 1/2, so basically, we have been trying to adopt for at least 1/2 of his life so he is well-versed in the lingo and concepts. After we left my office, I headed to WalMart to pick-up our pictures of the baby and Jason headed to daycare to pick-up Ashton. We agreed that we would tell Ashton together. On the way home, Jason called his older sister, Machelle, and told her that we would be coming to his mother's home to show the pictures, and asked if she would come. Jason had to be very, very careful what he said, so he spelled everything just to be sure Ash didn't catch-on. When we got home, Jason told Ashton that we had a surprise for him and asked him to sit down at the kitchen table. Ashton looked up on the table and then on the bar and said, "I don't see a surprise." We asked him if he knew what we had been waiting on and Ashton replied, "We got the call?!" I died laughing at this statement as I thought about his young age and the fact that he had been waiting for "the call" just as long as we had. Of course, he loved looking at her pictures and wanted to know if we were going to the big airport last night to bring her home. He kept saying, "She's so cute. She's so cute." We told her how little she is and he got down in the floor and started measuring with hands how tall she would stand ; ) He held his little arms out and said, "I'm going to hold her like this. I'm going to be a good big brother." It was a good night for all of us!

The total amount of time we've spent waiting for this day (includes our Ukraine and Ethiopia journey):
2 years, 8 months, 2 weeks, and 6 days

The amount of time spent waiting since our paperwork has been in Ethiopia:
10 months, 1 week, 4 days

A Huge Praise for Friends - A REFERRAL

When we were on our Ukraine adoption ride, we "met" (over the internet) a family who was also using our agency and were scheduled to travel to Ukraine just weeks after us. We got hooked-up with the Holland family right before we traveled to Ukraine and have stayed connected over the internet ever since. We switched to the Ethiopia program within weeks of each other and guess what, they got their referral! They received a referral for a 4 year old little girl and a 3 mos. little girl! You can read about their big call here.

We are just so excited for them! It is so amazing to know that God has brought the perfect the children into their lives. I was surprised when I got the e-mail from them yesterday because they submitted their dossier last November which was around 4 months or so after we did, but God had their children ready first! I can't wait until they pass court and we can see pictures of their little angels! Please pray that they will get a court date quickly and that the hearing will be successful on the 1st go around!

I didn't want to put anything on our blog until I saw that they had posted on theirs as well as Facebook, and now that they have, I am so glad that we can openly rejoice with them! What a ride they have had over the last 3 years but what a testimony God has given them as well.

CONGRATULATIONS, HOLLANDS!
