Specific Prayer Requests

Yesterday, our agency held another conference call for waiting families. Overall, most of the information was very vague and not very helpful, but then again I would rather that they not make promises that may not be fulfilled. International adoption is a roller coaster ride and can be highly unpredictable at times...this has nothing to do with our agency.

Right now, the Ethiopian government is trying to figure out how it is going to handle the influx of international adoption applications while first and foremost protecting the children against trafficking...even though paperwork varies from one family to another and the court system can be unpredictable right now, we greatly appreciate their efforts and determination. Please pray that the Ethiopian government can continue working to improve the adoption system and that new judges can be hired to handle the influx of cases.

Currently, 30% of families do not have successful court hearings on the first time around. The reason varies from case to case. Sometimes the judges want more specific information from the police and sometimes they want a birth family member to be present and substantiate that the child was indeed relinquished. Our agency is trying to assist as much as possible by helping to transport family members to court when required but overall they have very little influence at the court stage of the process. We were told yesterday that once a referral is received and accepted by the adoptive family, the hard part has just begun because of the unpredictable court situation. If a family is not successful during the first hearing, another court date is generally not scheduled for another month to two months...very depressing for adoptive families. Please pray that the procedures for court will become uniform and consistent so that first and foremost the children are protected and secondly, that forever families can be formed quickly.

Once court is successful and the child is legally adopted, then travel generally occurs within 2-4 weeks. Once the phone call is received that the court hearing was successful, then the adoptive family can finally breathe a sigh of relief and began preparing for travel. We will spend 5 days in Ethiopia and then travel back home as a forever family!

As for our specific family concerns, here they are:

At the current wait time of 9-11 months, we are expecting a referral anytime between April 25 and June 25. Based upon the families in front of us who are also waiting for very young infant females, we are anticipating more around June. Hopefully this will change in the months to come but our agency stated yesterday that they would not reduce the wait time until at least the end of March after the referral numbers are in for the first 3 months of this year. We're okay with that - I mean, after all what choice do we have. The one thing that just rips my heart out is the possibility that we may receive our referral and then not pass court before the end of July. The Ethiopian courts shutdown from August to October for the rainy season...during this period of time, NO adoptions will be granted. Based upon last year's occurrences, we probably would not be able to travel to Ethiopian until the end of the year...this means that we would have been waiting over 3 years for our child to enter our family....heartbreaking.

In my heart of hearts, I know that God has the perfect child or children picked-out for our family and that we will be united in His time, not ours. My eyes long to look upon the face of our little girl and my arms long to hold her....my heart already loves her. Please pray for God's perfect will to be done and for us to be mindful and respectful of His will.

Right now, more than likely, our child is still in her mother's womb. I think about her birth family a lot, and I pray for them constantly. What a sacrifice these parents will make in the months to come. They will probably think about this child for the rest of their lives. I am commited to praying and thinking about them for the rest of mine because without them, I would not have my daughter. Please pray for their safety and health, the safety and health of our child, and for peace for all of us.

Please pray that if they relinquish her, they will do so with lots of documentation providing as much specific information as possible so Julianna will be able to know about her biological family. If they abandon her instead of relinquishment, please pray that they do so at a safe location and that she is found very quickly by good people who will protect her. Also, please pray for guidance of the orphange worker in referring her to America World and then for America World in referring her to us.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6

6 Months Waiting for Referral

Today marks 6 months since we have been officially paperwork pregnant for Ethiopia. Of course, we began our financial and official commitment almost 2 1/2 years ago...for us, it was much easier being pregnant with Ashton! Both were/are experiences of a lifetime and truly blessings from God!

The time really is passing quickly. When we switched programs from Ukraine to Ethiopia, I was told that the wait time was about 5 months then it went to 7-9 months and currently we are expecting 9-11 months. This is the wait time until we receive our referral phone call stating that we have been matched with a child...then the really hard part begins - praying that we successfully make it through court on the first go around (you'll hear lots more about that in the months to come).

Please pray that the Ethiopian government will be very efficient and these children will be quickly (but reliably meaning no stolen babies for us) placed with forever families and travel to their new homeland.

Also, please pray that we are open to the child that God has picked out for us - even if she falls outside of our requested age range of 0-9 months. We are approved for 2 children under the age of 4 but we were told that this is a very rare placement because the Ethiopian government generally wants children to be 2 years apart in age and of course, we can't forget that Ashton just turned 4 in October (we can't forget him in the equation). We are also requesting twins, if available. Our agency says that receiving twins is like winning a lottery because generally at least one twin dies to malnourishment. For weeks now, God has really laid multiples on my heart....maybe He is preparing me for what is to come or maybe He wants to get my heart prepared for the next adoption (yes, we plan to adopt again), or maybe He just wants me to open my mind to possibilities. God can do anything...including giving us twins!

I'm trying to keep busy while at the same time doing something that I enjoy - cake decorating. I like to create and find decorating very relaxing. The pictures above are my latest creations.

The Spidey cake was for a little boy's birthday party last weekend and was the first cake that I actually sold...I was so excited! I was told that the little boy was very pleased, so that makes me happy. Also, there really wasn't a spot on the left side of the cakeboard, that's just a reflection on the shiny surface.

The spaceship cake is actually the Millenium Falcon from "Star Wars". This was made at the request of my now 9 year old nephew. His mom said that the cake needed to be "oatmeal" in color but I think it really should have been grey...oh well, I don't really know and all that matters is that my nephew knew what the cake was supposed to be immediately.

New Year's Trip to Long Beach, MS and New Orleans, LA

Over New Year's, we went to Long Beach, MS with PaPa Tudor and Aunt Leighbo. This was Ashton's first trip to the beach, and he had a blast! At first, he was hesitant to go near the water but that didn't last long. The temperature was high 70's and very pleasant. The water was cool but not so cold that we couldn't splash around. It was so fun to hear Ashton squeal with delight as he ran and splashed in the water and of course,"accidentally" fell on his bottom into the water.

On Friday, we visited with some friends who are more like family members than friends. It was really nice to catch-up on old times and just spend time talking. It was really difficult not having Mom with us. I thought about her constantly and knew that she would have loved seeing Ashton play on the beach. Leaving to go on the trip was hard because I felt like we were leaving Mom behind. I know she would have been proud to know that we took a trip as a family before Leigh goes back to the Marine Corps Officer Candidates School in May.

On Saturday, we went to New Orleans. Ashton rode the street car for the first time and had a blast. I think he would have ridden it for hours on end if we would have allowed him. It was raining, so we didn't venture into the French Quarter but we had a lot of fun just driving around and sightseeing. This was my first trip to the Coast after Katrina, so it was really sad to see the devastation firsthand. I can't even image how horrible it was right after the storm.

We had a really, really good time together. The holidays were hard but we made it through with a peace that only comes from God. We miss Mom more than we could ever explain but in our hearts we know that it is only a matter of time before we will see her again in Eternity.

Happy Birthday, PaPa Tudor (Erica's Daddy)

Happy Birthday!

15 Children Referred and It's Only Jan. 15th

These last two weeks have been incredible for America World referrals - 15 children have been referred this month alone! Today, 2 more families received referrals! Congratulations to the Dubose and Watson families on their new little boy referrals. The Watson baby is only 25 DAYS old....how awesome is that?!

Ashton Roped a Cactus and the Cactus Won

Last night, Ashton got his Daddy's leather belt (unbeknownst to either of us) and was acting like a cowboy with a lasso....well, he roped a cactus which fell over and knocked over a pot with several cacti in it that had very small pricklies. He had pricklies in his hands, his arms, and a few on his legs. We plucked Ashton for over 1 1/2 hours to make sure we he was okay. Needless to say, we missed church last night.

Now, I can't stand the cacti...they have been a sore spot with Jason and me since I got pregnant (well, actually since we got married but more importantly once I got pregnant). Typically, they are outside but we are having extremely cold weather right now, so they were out of Ashton's reach in the laundry room (but apparently not out of reach of his "cowboy rope"). After Ashton was cared for, then Jason and I found pricklies in our hands because of the cleaning-up of the mess that was made and having to stand them back up again. Ashton has never bothered the cacti and after last night's incident, I venture to say that he will never try to lasso one again!

It was absolutely horrible hearing him cry! Hopefully this incident will reinforce to Jason that I have been correct all these years in that a cactus belongs in a dessert and far away from a home with children! Jason said that I should have been watching Ashton better while he was in the shower getting ready for church but Ashton had been eating a sandwich and I was in the pantry looking for a cake pan. My thought is why was Jason's belt laying around where Ashton could get to it in the first place - it should have been in the closet hanging up....no one in the household is without blame to some part and secondly, accidents happen (thankfully no one was seriously injured).

Congratulations on Referrals

Today, two families received referral calls. The first family, the Jones, received a referral for a 2 year old little girl. The second family, the VanDruffs, received a very unexpected referral for a sibling set with a 3 year old little girl and a 7 year old little boy. This family's paperwork was sent to Ethiopia with ours, so they weren't expecting a referral for several more months....how awesome is God! We are so excited for all the wonderful forever families that God united this month. That we know of, our agency has referred 13 children since just last Monday!

Ashton's Proposal - Young Love

On Dec. 19, Ashton's class at preschool had a Christmas party and exchanged gifts. Well, Ashton had to buy 2 gifts...both for his little girlfriend and fellow classmate, Macy. The actual gift was a Barbie doll but the very special gift that he insisted he must buy was nothing short of.... a ring! The week before the party while we were driving past Jared's Diamond Gallery, he exclaimed that he wanted to get Macy a ring. Well, Jared's is a little more costly than a 4 year old's piggy bank could afford, so we had to settle for.... Big Lots! He picked-out a pink, heart shaped ring that he said was perfect for Macy. We put the ring in a jewelry box and wrapped it up. He said that after she opened it he proclaimed his love to her! Oh, I'm going to be a mother-in-law at 31! Young love is so adorable!

What a GREAT day - ANOTHER REFERRAL

Well, it appears as if America World staff worked right up to 5:00 Eastern time! Another referral was given out right at 5:00 p.m. to the Crowell family - that makes 3 for today! They are headed home to open the e-mail together and get more info. They are requesting 0-12 months boy or multiples, so we'll just have to wait and see how God blessed them! Congratulations Crowell family!

Little Girl Referrals

Woo hoo! Our agency just handed-out 2 infant girl referrals! We are so excited for the Lunceford and Bowman families!

We have a Yahoo chat group that is only comprised of America World families adopting from Ethiopia, and we have formed our own little spreadsheet of families' requests (boy, girl, either, sibling groups, ages). Although there are many families who do not participate in this group, it does help families to forecast per se where they are in the line-up. Our agency has stated that if a family states that they are willing to accept either a boy or a girl, then they will more than likely receive a referral for a boy because little girl referrals are not as prevalent. Based upon the KNOWN families, there are 15 families in front of us for a little girl, so that gives you an idea of where we are at on the list!

We are praying for lots of referrals this month because referrals have been slow the last 2 months due to a packed transitional home, closed courts, and a slow down in paperwork that determines whether or not a child is truly an orphan...no stolen babies for any of us! The first time frame we were given for referrals was 7-9 months but last month our agency said that until referrals start moving again, they are anticipating the wait for girls to be 9-11 months. We are truly praying that the time frame will be reduced so that forever families can be formed!
